At Incendo’s workshops, I’ve seen how a single, so-called ‘basic’ question can unlock deeper understanding for everyone in the room time and time again. Sometimes it’s the person who asks about the fundamentals who helps us discover gaps in our advanced processes or ways of working. At other times, it’s the seemingly naive question about the nuts and bolts of a topic that leads to our most innovative solutions.
Bruce Lee captured this perfectly when he said:
“A wise man can learn more from a foolish question than a fool can learn from a wise answer.”
This isn’t just a nice sentiment – it’s how we deliberately structure our workshops at Incendo. We build in ‘question breaks’ where participants can challenge assumptions (ours, their own, other people’s). I always look forward to – and welcome – the moments when someone starts with, “This might sound like a bit of a silly question, but…” or “Hang on, I don’t get it. What about…”.
In my experience, those moments often lead to our most valuable discussions and are far more meaningful for training course participants than a cursory “Any questions before we move on?” from the facilitator.
