A week ago today, we decided to give a forever home to a wonderful little dog from a rescue centre in Sussex. His name is Rocky and he’s a Cairn Terrier crossed with a Wire-haired Dachshund; he’s four years old and has settled into life with our other two dogs very well so far. He’s been neglected a bit before entering the rescue centre, so he has a couple of minor health problems, but behaviourally he’s great. Having owned a rescue dog before, I already knew that rehoming a pet could be a life-changing experience. While the journey has its challenges, my own take on it is that the rewards definitely far outweigh the difficulties.
As I’m learning (or re-learning) firsthand with Rocky, rescuing a dog not only provides a loving companion but also imparts valuable lessons that can positively impact our everyday lives.
Lesson 1: Patience is a virtue
When you welcome a rescue dog into your home, you quickly realise that patience is an essential virtue. Rocky has settled in pretty quickly, so it’s been easy to forget that – like all rescue dogs – he comes with his own set of unique experiences and behaviours that may take time to adjust. Learning to be patient, understanding and gentle during the acclimatisation process is key to building a strong bond and helping him feel safe and secure.
This lesson in patience can be applied to various aspects of our lives. Whether it’s dealing with a challenging colleague, navigating a complex project, or supporting a team member through a difficult time, cultivating patience can help us move through these situations with greater ease and empathy.
Lesson 2: Embrace the unexpected
Rescue dogs are often unpredictable and their behaviour can be a positive surprise. One day this week, Rocky had a few moments when he was timid and cautious, and then he was suddenly back to being playful and adventurous. Embracing this sense of the unexpected is part of the joy of rescue dog ownership.
In our own lives, we can apply this lesson by being open to new experiences and opportunities. Instead of rigidly sticking to a plan or the “I’ve always done it this way” mindset, we can learn to go with the flow and find joy in the unexpected twists and turns that life presents. This flexibility can lead to personal growth, new discoveries and a more fulfilling journey.
Lesson 3: Celebrate the small victories
When you adopt a rescue dog, the small victories can be just as meaningful as the big ones. Witnessing Rocky fitting into our ‘pack’ and feeling more comfortable in our presence has been incredibly rewarding. Celebrating these small milestones helps to reinforce positive behaviour and build confidence.
In our personal and professional lives, we can apply this lesson by acknowledging and celebrating the small wins. Whether it’s completing a challenging task, overcoming a personal obstacle, or making progress towards a long-term goal, taking the time to recognise and appreciate these small victories can boost our morale, foster a sense of accomplishment, and motivate us to keep moving forward.
Lesson 4: Unconditional love
Rescue dogs have an incredible capacity for unconditional love. Despite the challenges they may have faced in the past, they are often eager to trust, love and form a deep bond with their new human companions – I’m certainly seeing this with Rocky! This unwavering affection can be a powerful reminder of the transformative power of love.
In our own lives, we can strive to cultivate this same unconditional love towards ourselves, our loved ones and even strangers. By embracing compassion, empathy and acceptance, we can create more meaningful connections and deeper relationships, and contribute to a more harmonious world.
Lesson 5: Live in the moment
Rocky reminds me several times a day that rescue dogs have a remarkable ability to live in the present moment. He doesn’t dwell on his turbulent past or worry about the future; he simply enjoys the here and now, finding joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as a belly rub, a walk in the field behind our house, or a tasty treat.
This lesson in mindfulness can be incredibly valuable for us as well. By learning to be present and focused on the current moment, we can reduce stress, increase our overall wellbeing and make the most of the time we have. Whether it’s savouring some good food, fully engaging in a conversation, or taking a moment to appreciate the beauty around us, living in the moment can enhance our quality of life and help us find greater fulfillment.
Adopting a dog really can be a transformative experience, one that not only provides us with a loving pet but also imparts valuable life lessons. If you are considering rescuing a dog, know that you’re not just gaining a loyal companion – you’re also embarking on a journey of personal growth and self-discovery. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the triumphs and let your rescue dog be a guiding light on your path to greater wellbeing and fulfilment.
