Let’s be honest – parenting isn’t always easy. Although it’s often amazing and rewarding to watch your children grow, and to help them learn to be independent, it can also be really hard work. Many parents feel somewhat burned out for a whole host of reasons and if that includes you, the chances are that at some point someone has suggested you try mindfulness.
It seems that everyone is into mindfulness and its ability to transform you and your family’s lives. But where do you start? There are so many books, podcasts and apps out there; it can all be a bit confusing and intimidating. In our unique ‘Mindful Parent, Resilient Child‘ programme, Incendo’s founder and principal consultant, Justin Standfield, blends elements of traditional Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction with psychology to support you in being a more mindful parent (and through you, to plant seeds of mindfulness practice in your children).
Whether you’d describe yourself as a seasoned parent or you’re just starting out in family life, the fail-safe best practices shared in this programme will help put you in charge of your mind, attention and thoughts. Combined with some straightforward Positive Psychology approaches that you can apply at home, this will in turn build the resilience and confidence your children deserve.
“In this transformational mindfulness programme for parents, I’ll support you in developing a healthy relationship with your own thoughts and I’ll show you how to help your child to ‘find their brave’ and uncover the strength in any anxiety they might be feeling.”
The programme provides essential step-by-step strategies to build the emotional scaffolding that every child needs in order to become resilient. All of this is offered within the context of you developing your own mindfulness practice, which will support you in your role as a parent while also learning to take some quality time for yourself.
What’s in it for you?
The mindfulness training aspects of the ‘Mindful Parent, Resilient Child’ programme will teach you to be more present and to perceive the world more realistically; as a result, you will view situations more objectively. This will allow you to react to situations with greater intention, as you can respond based on a dispassionate evaluation of the issue at hand, instead of based on preconceived notions or knee-jerk emotional reactions. Mindfulness is a completely trainable skill that leads to some wide-ranging advantages, including:
- Better focus and concentration
- Reduced anxiety and increased resilience
- Improved problem solving and creativity
- Greater levels of job satisfaction
- Lower levels of stress
- Better communication and listening skills
- More clarity, peace of mind and emotional balance
- Stronger immune system health
Each session is 90 minutes long and includes handouts, exercises to try with your child at home, mindfulness diaries and audio recordings of our guided mindfulness meditations.
What’s in it for your child?
Although your child won’t participate in the programme themselves, rest assured that they will be firmly at the heart of the sessions you take part in and the learning that you will apply at home. During the ‘Mindful Parent, Resilient Child’ programme, you will learn:
- To teach your child how to decode their feelings
- How to help your child with their own fight/flight/freeze response
- Key mindfulness tools and breathing techniques to make your child the boss of their own brain
- Powerful ideas on how to influence children and teens effectively
- How to ask the right questions to increase resilience and cope with adversity and set back
- Game-changing strategies for when your child says “I’ll never be able to do it right” or “I’m no good at this” or “Why do I always get everything wrong?”
- Easy-to-use tools to normalise anxiety and appreciate the strengths of an anxious brain
When and where does this programme run?
This programme is offered in two ways:
- an ‘in house’ programme within an organisation as part of their employee wellbeing offering; or
- an ‘open’ programme available to the public
If you’re interested in an ‘in house’ programme to bring the benefits of the ‘Mindful Parent, Resilient Child’ programme into your company or organisation, please use the button below to send us a message on our contact form – we’ll get back to you straight away to fix up a no-obligation conversation.
If you’re interested in joining a public ‘open’ programme, the next ‘Mindful Parent, Resilient Child’ programme will commence in late March 2018 and will run for 8 weeks on a weekday evening at a venue in either Whiteley or the Meon Valley area, depending on demand. There is no requirement to attend every session (although that would be great!), so you can relax about having to commit to a block of time when your life is already busy and you aren’t sure if you can join us every week. Please use the button below to send us a message on our contact form, confirming which location you’re interested in. At this stage we need to know whether you would be able to attend sessions at either Whiteley or the Meon Valley area (likely to be Wickham, Bishops Waltham, Swanmore or Waltham Chase). We’ll ask you for your name, phone number and email address, but we promise never to spam you.
